What Is a Yarn Swift, and Do You Need One?
Almost everyone meets a swift the same way. You buy a beautiful hand dyed skein, you get it home, you try to knit straight from it, and within ten minutes you are sitting on the floor picking at a knot the size of a grapefruit. The swift is the tool that stops that happening. It is old, it is simple, and once you own one you stop thinking about the problem entirely.
Why yarn arrives as a hank in the first place
Yarn that has been hand dyed, or dyed in small lots, is wound into a long loop and twisted into a bundle before it is sold. That shape lets dye reach every strand evenly and lets the fiber relax rather than sit compressed for months on a shelf. It also travels well and looks lovely in a shop basket. The catch is that a hank is a storage format, not a working format.
Untwist a hank and you are holding a single circle of yarn that can be several hundred yards around. Nothing holds the strands in order any more except the loose ties the dyer added. Let that circle drop and the strands cross. Pull on one end and half the loop follows. This is not clumsiness, it is geometry, and it happens to experienced knitters just as readily as to beginners.
Hanks turn up across the whole weight range too, from cobweb lace to arm-knitting rope, so there is no yarn category where a swift is irrelevant.

What a swift does that your hands cannot
A swift does three things at once. It holds the loop open at a fixed diameter, it keeps light and even tension on every strand, and it rotates freely so the yarn can leave the circle in the exact order it was wound. That third job is the one people underestimate. A static holder still lets strands cross as you drag yarn off it. A rotating holder does not, because the loop turns instead of the yarn sliding across itself.
Adjustability matters as much as rotation. Skeins are not standardized, and a frame that only fits one circumference is a frame that fails on half your stash. The four kinds of swift you will meet
Swift shopping gets confusing because four quite different tools share the name. They all hold a hank open. They differ in how they mount, how they fold and how much they cost.

Swift, winder and holder are three different things
These words get swapped around constantly, including by people selling them. Here is the distinction that matters when you are choosing.

The confusion is worth clearing up because the phrase "skein winder" is used for both a swift and a winder depending on who is writing. When a listing is vague, look at the picture.
