Rotation is the thing you are really buying
Hold a skein on a chair back and pull. The loop stays still and the strand you are pulling slides across every other strand it touches. Do that for a few hundred yards and some of those crossings become knots. It is not a matter of being careful enough, it is friction doing what friction does.
Put the same skein on a swift and pull. The frame turns, the whole loop moves together and no strand travels across its neighbors at all. A swift turns hanks into balls, so it earns its place the moment hanks start coming through your door: hand dyed skeins, festival yarn, anything that arrives as a twisted loop. Machine wound skeins with a pull-out center are already ready to knit, and they leave the frame nothing to convert. The clamp model needs a table, desk or counter with an edge it can grip from above and below; where no room in the house has one, a weighted tabletop model does the same job without a clamp.
